I have been thinking long and hard on my suspension setup for the rx7, looks as if I will be using a pieced together system of 240sx and Mustang parts. my, ideal goal is to run QA1 coil-overs on the rx7, but QA1 doesn't make a system for many imports, sadly the rx7 is not one of them. So, nobody makes tubular adjustable control arms, racing beat makes adjustable arms but I don't like them, and they are pricey!
These are for the FB Rx7 and cost $425 |
What I had been dreaming was some tubular adjustable arms. like these.....
These are for a S13 and cost $175 |
The origanal Idea as to just use these LCAs and replace the RX7 coilover system with one from RE Speed. Then I saw this.... an rx7 LCA and a S13 LCA next to eachother
I have confirmed that the stock S13 LCA will fit the rx7 as well, the rx7 tension rods bolting up as well, so there is a very cheap alternative. they will still need the bushings shaved down and the bolt holes upsized to M14 but pretty much bolt in goodness.
Here is where my idea struck... Why stop there? Why not use the s13 knuckles brakes and coil-overs? The brakes are bigger and the coil-overs better , and the parts are very easy to come by.
Bigger Brakes
Better Coilover Options
Common Parts
Sounds like a plan to me!
But I had trouble finding s13 coil-overs that would fit my budget and get the job done. There are many out there you could run whatever you like when it comes to them. I really like the Stance line, and priced the ksport line, and still kinda wanted QA1s mainly for price and that local circle track places would have parts if i need to ever overhaul them. The biggest setback is that QA1 doesn't make the lower mounting brackets to fit S13's, hell they don't make many at all! But they do make them for the mustang! Now I'm still not sure if they are close to the same bolt pattern or spacing as a S13. So, the only research I currently have to do on the suspension setup is find out how the the s13 strut mounts compare to mustang strut mounts, if they are close....then QA1 shocks and Struts on all four sides of my Rx7 is possible! And if you wanted to go a cheaper route you could used a set of mustang struts and strange Engineering coil-overs.
Next, I'll need a Camber/Caster Strut Bearing Plate to mount the coilover to. RE speed sells one for the FB.....
But at about $200 is kinda pricey! Camber plate for the FC Rx7 go for around $75. Much cheaper and will fit in the 1st gen with alittle bit of drilling the opening on the stock mount holes.
Then pretty much The whole front suspension is finished! I will still need to work out the swaybar goodies and and spring rates, steering knuckle mount location, tierod ends, but I belive the whole front suspension is doable!
QA1 Carrera Shock Commonly Found Used For Around $30 |
Carrera QA1 shock are easy for me to come by as they are commonly used in circle track racing and once I measure my shocks, I will have almost a direct replacement. and as far as ride height adjustment
Now after completing this swap with all s13 gear, i have also help a friend do one entirely with FC suspension as well.
Check out Part 2 for how i did it
S13 FB Suspension PART 2
Thank you for posting this. I've been wanting to do this conversion for close to 3 years and I'm finally getting around to it. Do you have any advice for me?
ReplyDeleteSorry on the late response I have just updated the suspension talk and made a new post. Feel free to ask more questions if you need any help!

I'm also 5.0 swapped by the way
ReplyDeleteI been messing around with using a s13 rear coilover with a strut hat that I custom made to clear the rx7 rear inner fenders I'll have to post pics of my modified LCAs and my camber caster setup
